Life's Greatest Gifts
Every great once in a while, life brings us a gift. A very special person who holds a very special place in our hearts. Tonight I got to see one of those people.
I have a friend in southern Humboldt whom I connected with through my horseshoeing business. He has been a client for years, and we bonded instantly. From the moment we met, he was one of my favorite people on the planet.
He loves culture. He's been all over the world. He loves animals, art, movies, and books. He loves that I'm Italian, and loves to cook me elaborate Italian meals. Early on, we started the ritual of always sharing a meal together when I came up to take care of the horses feet.
Tonight, while at his ranch, I literally worked until the sun went down. (My goodness, there is something about a southern Humboldt sunset that just makes my heart soar and my eyes well up.) I wasn't even able to finish my last horse because it got dark too fast.
So, my friend and I usually do lunch, or an early dinner. Tonight was the first time we had really had dinner at "dinner time." He set out brie and (gf) crackers, we poured some white wine and we caught up on life. We got lost in conversation about travel and such, ask the things we want to do... France, Scotland, good food, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Belize, pyramids, movies, names and heritage, love, and loss, and animals. He said to me, "You're the only other person I've ever met who has resuscitated a dog." LOL We have the same kind, but guarded heart.
We had dinner of poached fresh snapper, (gf) penne pasta with butter, and spinach and almond salad. It was simple and exquisite.
It felt refreshing to tell someone everything that's gone on in my life in the last 20 days, and have them truly understand to the best of their ability. So frequently, perspective and experience can limit us humans from connecting.
This man has been on this Earth more than twice as long as I have. He has much to share. He brings out a sense of wonder in me, similar to what a 6 year old might feel while listening to magnificent stories. It is refreshing and uplifting to engage in conversation with others who also see such wonder and magic in the world.
I'm thankful that the universe put my friend in my path. He has sure brightened my world in the short time I've known him.
He will always be the person who taught me to appreciate good company, good food and a good bottle of wine.
